Frequently asked questions
|
| 1. WHO RUNS HOT SHOTS?
My name is John Wilpers. I founded Hot Shots in 1996 because the
only winter soccer options for girls were extremely competitive and did
not focus on developing skills and self-esteem or even having fun. I am
a 17-year veteran youth soccer coach and “soccer dad.” I run Hot Shots
in my spare time and am assisted by paid college soccer players and volunteer high school varsity players and by older Hot Shots
players.
2. WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR HOT SHOTS?
Pre-school (as young as 2 at the parent's discretion) thru 5th-grade girls. Residents of all S. Shore towns (NOT just Marshfield). Girls do NOT need to
be on a soccer team or even know how to play soccer. Hot Shots is both
a non-threatening introduction to soccer and a skill-enhancement
program for more advanced girls.
3. WHY IS THE COST $75?
For $75, girls get 10 classes, a T-shirt, a medal, and a hip hop dance
session. The fee also covers gym rental, insurance (roughly $3,000/yr),
and janitor fees. I pay the college girls but the rest of the staff and
myself are all-volunteer.
4. DOES MY CHILD HAVE TO COME TO ALL THE SESSIONS?
No. With no teams, you aren’t letting anyone down. We review everything each week.

5. ARE THERE REFUNDS FOR SNOW DAYS AND VACATIONS?
No. Because the T-shirt, medal and insurance are $40 of the $75 fee,
each session costs just a few dollars. I can’t offer refunds except for kids who
drop out by week 5.
6. WHAT’S THIS ABOUT HIP-HOP DANCING?
For a fun change of pace, a professional instructor from Boston teaches the eight week.
7. WHAT SHOULD MY DAUGHTER BRING OR WEAR?
Soccer ball (size 2-3 for Tykes, 4 for others), water bottle, gym shoes, shorts, shirt.
8. DO PARENTS HAVE TO STAY?
Pre-school & kindergarten girls’ parents must stay and play. Others
are encouraged to stay, and are regularly needed to play roles in some
of the crazy games we play.
9. WHAT IS THE “READING IS A KICK” PROGRAM?
Through the sale of Hot Shots souvenirs, we’ve been able to donate over
$6,000 worth of books to Marshfield’s five elementary schools over the
last eight years.
10. I’VE HEARD SOMETHING ABOUT AN ART CONTEST?
All girls do a soccer drawing for the 4th Sunday. We vote by age group
and session. Each winner is printed on the back of that T-shirt. Every
girl’s name is on the front.
